SkinOwl x noissue

A personal skincare project turned trusted skincare icon, SkinOwl takes us on a journey of plant-based skincare discovery and use of noissue eco-packaging. Read it all here!

What started as a personal project for Annie Tavelin has become the spark for the creation of one of the many renowned skincare brands, SkinOwl. Having experienced for herself the real challenges of having acne and the scarcity of genuinely effective solutions on the market, she decided to take matters into her own hands, and the rest is history.

SkinOwl emphasizes the concept of "you-time" by creating skincare essentials that effectively heal through plant-based, cruelty-free ingredients. At the same time, they emulate the spa experience, which has a much-deserved place in one’s meditative self-care routine.

The experience doesn’t end there: SkinOwl’s commitment to sustainability and providing its customers exceptional service—online and in-store—is also shown through its customized, eco-packaging from noissue. By using compostable and recycled packaging, creating a memorable experience for customers wouldn’t have to cost the planet so much.

Tell us a bit about your brand!

SkinOwl turned 11 this past September. Our skincare collection is vegan, cruelty-free, conscious, plant-based, and was created as a result of my own journey with cystic acne as an adult. Instead of going on Accutane, I went back to school to study Cosmetic Chemistry in my early 30's and began formulating products that eventually healed my skin.

What was originally a journey to help my skin eventually became the catalyst to helping thousands of others with their most stubborn skin issues. Looking back, if I had never had acne, I never would have created SkinOwl. SkinOwl has been sold in 250 stores worldwide, featured in Vogue, Allure, Forbes, and sold at Anthropologie, FabFitFun and Aerie. We opened our one-and-only brick and mortar in the beautiful South East community of Boise in 2021.

I felt there was a gap in the acne product industry and I was determined to fill that gap. Every product I had tried to heal my own acne was irritating, sensitizing, and encouraged me to exfoliate daily. I found the answer to healing my skin was in nourishing anti-inflammatories, less being more. I knew I could help people with their skin in the way I helped mine and that's what we've done over the last 11 years.

Our skincare collection is vegan, cruelty-free, conscious, plant-based, and small batch. We have kept the same formulations of our products over the last 11 years, even as we've grown. We make everything from eye concentrates to body oils to antioxidant moisturizers to herbal steam and golden face rollers.

Tell us about the design for your packaging and how you’re using them?

We use our gorgeous tissue paper in our brick + mortar in the retail bags we give to customers at checkout and in our mailer boxes when sending products to our online community. As a sustainable, conscious brand, knowing how much waste is accumulated in the beauty industry, we knew we wanted to do our part in cleaning it up.

What made noissue a good fit for your packaging?

Our "Blissfully Bundled' holiday boxes and peachy owl tissue paper keeps the aesthetic elevated while not having to sacrifice the health of our planet. These choices make a difference and we make sure we don't lose sight of how this choice affects our start to finish process.
